Austin and Springfield missionaries

Austin with the Springfield District missionaries.

Our apartment here in Alturas is basically a garage in front with a door. Inside that door is a hallway the leads into the main room and kitchen. To the right of the hallway is our bedroom, and directly across from the entrance is the bathroom. When I first got here, half of the lights were missing or burned out, there was no battery in the smoke alarm, the bathroom fan didn’t work, there were no screens in the windows, and a pile of old thrown away clothes sat in the corner of the closet. Over the last while I’ve corrected a lot of the
essential issues. That’s just the nature of Alturas: it’s a run down, old town.

Thankfully, the people here are friendly and welcoming; a real community. I haven’t had anyone yell at us or call us anything the whole time I’ve been here. What’s more, we tracted out a lady this last week who told us she wanted to join the church and be baptized. People here are very forward and plain. Rarely do we have someone just try to avoid us; they will almost always give us a “yes we’re interested” or a “no we’re not.” Also, even with the branch here being so small, people know the members. Everyone knows everyone.

The Senior couple here, the Dixons, are leaving Alturas today to work in the mission offices. We helped them pack up a couple days ago. Their upstairs apartment was also apparently the first meeting place of the church in Alturas. They are a very neat couple and all the branch was sad to see them go.

We, on the other hand, are out of Alturas until Wednesday night for meetings this week.  We came up to Klamath today to hang out with our zone since tomorrow will be a conference in Roseburg (4 hours away from here) with our entire mission—an event that hasn’t happened since I got to the mission—and we won’t get back to even Klamath Falls until 9:00. Then we’ll stay the night so that Wednesday I can go to a district leader conference in the morning. Four hours afterward I’ll end up back in Alturas. It’s like a mini vacation from my area, so I’ll apologize in advance (especially to my family) for not writing to anyone this week.

I love it here, though. It’s been fun. Hope you all are doing well.

Much love,
Elder Rushton – Missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
