Langley–Brookswood: The Forest Letter from Feb 11, 2014

It happened!!!!!! I’m finally out of Penticton!! Transfer calls last Monday were crazy! The Penticton sisters area closed and the Elders got whitewashed! (that means both Elders were taken out!) So Penticton has two new Elders and that is it!  It was pretty intense.

Langley,_British_Columbia_(city)_Location

This is Langley BC, Canada.

So Elder Bolkcom got sent to the middle of nowhere: Burns Lake. That is an 18 hour drive from mission HQ. And up North where it’s -40 right now! So I laughed at him and then got my transfer call! I’m now serving in the City of Langley, the Brookswood ward. I haven’t been here for long… but I already LOVE it! The ward is awesome, the weather is different (lots of rain but warmer… and I like it a lot!), there are a TON of different nationalities and my new companion, Elder Johnston, is a stud. He’s from Northern Utah/ Southern Idaho and he has lost 60 pounds on his mission!! He was serving up North in Vanderhoof and he had to have an emergency appendectomy. It’s a really crazy story. But while he was in the hospital and recovering, he lost a bunch of weight.

On a sad note… I found out I’ve gained weight. Ten. Whole. Pounds. Man, I’ve never weighed 145 before in my life! Hopefully I don’t gain too much more!

So Monday through Wednesday we packed, said goodbye to members and investigators and rode the bus to Richmond. We stayed with Elder Johnstons dad Elder Gallen that night and then went to transfer meeting in the morning. Transfers are always great! I got to see Elder Sly there and he goes home at the end of this transfer. I got to see my old MTC district too, so that was great. Then, I met Elder Johnston! So, in this new area,  they just had their car taken away for a new sister area that’s opening up, so now I don’t have a car! Public Transit baby! So the Willoughby Elders in our district drove us and our luggage to my new house and then we went out to get bus passes and work for the night!

So Brookswood is in the Lower Mainland and it rains ALL THE TIME, but it’s great and I love it! The fog gets super thick at night and in the morning too and it reminds me of Stephen King’s “The Mist” somtimes. It’s pretty cool. There are a ton of giant trees around here too and it feels like I’m working in a Forest sometimes (hence the title of this e-mail!). Our chapel is located right next to the Langley Temple so it’s great to see it all the time! It’s surrounded by trees and really, really beautiful.

On Sunday, Elder Johnston and I had to get up really early to get to the bus to get to ward council that starts at 7:00 a.m. Our house is on the opposite side of Langley, so it took some work to travel there. We were going to be late too, so we had to run to make it on time. So we walked into the building covered in sweat just in time to see President Tilleman going into the relief society room for ward council. He made us do a role-play with him during the meeting to show how to have a “Quality Gospel Conversation”. It went well… and we turned him into a new investigator! So that was good! Then he spoke in sacrament meeting and taught priesthood. That man will be an apostle someday, you mark my words. He is a fireball and filled with the spirit. I’ve never met anyone

like him before and he is incredible.

So my time in Brookswood has been excellent so far! I love it here and I can feel that this week will go pretty good! I love all of you so dearly and I pray for you all the time, so have a great week family and friends. May the Lord bless you ever so much in your endeavors! Love you all!

–Elder Rushton The Third

P.S. Elder D. Todd Christofferson will be visiting my mission the first week of March with three other general authorities… I-pads?? We’ll see ha
