Where He Went, He Usually Walked

Elder Austin Rushton shoulder ride

Austin is not doing much walking in this picture.

Oh, why hello there boys and girls. I suppose you’re all here wondering what I did this week, aren’t you? Well you should know up front that I did it all without complaining, so that’s a small victory in itself :)

So what happened this week? Well for starters, we walked. A lot. Like ten miles a day. But, you know, we bumped into all sorts of people that way, so it wasn’t without purpose! On top of that, this whole Meals on Wheels thing we’ve been helping out with is draining the miles we’re allotted on the car, so we recovered a little from that this week by walking.

We’ve been siphoning through houses, trying to find someone who will open their doors to us. No such luck, but that’s no reason to give up. I’ve been handing out some of the classic pass-along cards when I get the chance, and every time I get one of those into someone else’s hands without having to convince them to take it, it’s “mission accomplished” for this kid.

Elder Kelsey and I had to split up three nights this week. One of those nights I took a member of the ward out to see a guy we met. He grew up in the church, but skipped being baptized. He’s pretty handy with fixing things. Anyways, the member I brought to him is pretty different from him, but out of the blue he told me before we went in that he had had a spiritual confirmation that day that he was supposed to be there for this investigator that night. So we went in and they talked. And talked. And talked some more. I didn’t hardly get a word in. But it went great! He came to church Sunday.

The other two times we split up was for the other elders’ sakes. First they needed me to come with one of them to give a baptismal interview to a Sister investigator they’ve been teaching, and we had a lesson that night too, so we split for that night. Then they had two lessons at the same time, so I had to go to see that same girl again! But this Sister is awesome! She nannies for some members that live in the next ward over (my old ward, Santa Clara 6th), but lives in our ward boundaries. So the sister missionaries over there that have been teaching her are slowly handing her off to the Springfield 1B Elders. Our lessons are massive, with two missionaries and a member coming from our side, and usually at least the two sisters and a member coming from the other. So six of us at any given time are teaching one person. The house is humongous, though, so it works (to give you a feel for how big this place is, they use one big room as a trampoline room, but that’s only like a tenth of the house). But she is due to be baptized this coming Saturday! It’s exciting.

This Sunday we had ward conference. It was really good. Our stake here is focusing primarily on hastening the work of salvation by increasing individual members’ conversion. That means increasing regular temple attendance, getting people to actually study their family history, making sure everyone is reading scriptures regularly, and getting the youth out on missions. These sound like typical Mormon problems! But they are key factors in establishing the church, no doubt!

Nothing else to report this week. Thanks for reading everyone!
