I think I got rewarded for being grateful for my TacoTime experiences last week, because this week was all Taco Express, literally and metaphorically!
First of all, we got Meals on Wheels dropped on us last minute for Wednesday morning, but that was fine because we didn’t have anything setup anyways. What’s more, they assigned us a route in our own area. Here’s another miracle: I dropped a container of soup but it landed flush on its lid, so it didn’t spill at all!
Next, we were taken out to lunch on Thursday by our Youth Pastor buddy. He took us to Jimmy Johns and we were able to talk for a long time about some hot subjects, like same-gender attraction. He is such a decent guy, and I’m glad to be able to bring his church in harmony with ours in this small way. While we were there, I also bumped into the Ward Mission Leader’s wife from Santa Clara 6th whom I hadn’t seen since she had her baby. ( P.S. I did get to meet the baby
Friday was District Meeting. I asked Sister Hillner in my district to teach a portion on families, and she went above and beyond with her presentation. She had us draw our families doing something together, and I drew my family playing music together! Then she told us to focus on just the one we drew that represented ourselves and imagine all the rest were gone. How different would that activity be? Then she brought out cookies and told Elder Fetzer to try and pull a chocolate chip out of the cookie. Obviously it came out broken and destroyed the cookie in the process. Sister Hillner told us the cookie represented a family, and the chocolate chip represented an individual. When we bring individuals into the church and not families, it’s traumatic on both sides, but when we can get families…a cookie is so much better than just a chocolate chip!
After District Meeting, Elder Bearss and Elder Grantham took us to, yes, the mythical Taco Express. It is real! And the food wasn’t half bad either! Then I went on an exchange with Elder Beasley, and that was good too! We found a bunch of people to schedule lessons with!
Saturday we exchanged back, and Brother Jacobson bought us, the zone leaders, and the other 1st ward elders all Subway sandwiches! It was awesome! We then took a trip over to the church to print off a couple things, but realized none of our keys could get us into a printer. In fact, we still don’t know what two of them do…we tried every lock we could think of! But on the bright side we did find a foursquare ball in the building, so I stuck it in a closet so we could go play some foursquare, kickball, and/or one-ball dodgeball today!
Saturday night we didn’t have anyone sign up to feed us. So while we were eating dinner in our apartment, we heard a knock on the door. I thought it may have just been the other Elders in the ward, but to my surprise it was a man in his fifties who introduced himself as a member of the church wanting to return to activity. We talked for a bit, gave him directions to the church, and said we’d organize a ride for him. It was really cool, and I’m excited for him to come back!
Finally, Sunday night we were able to contact some referrals: a couple teenagers who knew a less-active member. They let us teach the whole Restoration lesson from Preach My Gospel, and said they’d read and pray about the Book of Mormon. We are going back there Thursday. We hope to start teaching the whole family soon!
It was a great week. I hope you’re all doing great, and I look forward to hearing from all of you.
